Unwind in style: holiday in the Caribbean

Friday, 4 April 2018 4:16 PM

The Caribbean has long been a destination associated with luxury, relaxation and natural beauty. The name of this region instantly conjures up images of sun-kissed beaches, azure seas and laidback local communities that are always ready to welcome travellers.

This all makes the Caribbean an incredibly alluring destination - but what if you’re keen to visit the region but don’t want to stay in one of the standard all-inclusive resorts? Well, you’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of other options, and we’re going to run through a few of the best.

Boutique hotels

If you’re looking for luxury on a smaller scale, head for one of the Caribbean’s boutique hotels. This kind of accommodation has been growing in popularity and there are now many high-end boutique hotels across various islands.

They are typically in stunning locations - often right by a beautiful white-sand beach - they tend to focus on personal service and therefore don’t have a vast number of guests, and, in many cases, the rooms or villas themselves will be quirky or a little bit different.

Barbados, the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands and Jamaica are just a few of the Caribbean nations that have embraced the idea of boutique accommodation, with everything from self-catering fishermen’s cottages to full-service hotels on offer for guests. They might not always come cheap, but they certainly will ensure you have a holiday to remember.

Luxury yachts

As the biggest attraction of any Caribbean destination is its beaches and coastline, it makes sense to book a sailing holiday in the Caribbean if you want to see the best of it - and not have to worry about being restricted to a single resort or island.

If it’s luxury you’re looking for, a crewed yacht charter is undoubtedly the best option, as this sees you not only provided with a high-end boat, but also a captain and chef to ensure you don’t have to lift a finger when it comes to the navigation or cooking, unless you want to of course!

This means you can tailor your itinerary to suit your interests, as you can speak to your captain about a potential route from your starting port and go from there. The other attraction of sailing holidays is the ability to moor up wherever you please, so if you pass an enticing bay or a secluded cove, you can drop anchor and go ashore to explore at your leisure.

Eco resorts

There’s no doubt about it, the Caribbean is a truly beautiful place and its natural attractions need to be protected. If you want to do your bit during your holiday, consider staying in an eco resort.

As with the boutique hotels, there are a growing number of environmentally-friendly establishments dotted throughout the region and these places not only give you somewhere comfortable to stay, but also allow you to learn more about the Caribbean’s unique ecosystems.

In addition to using eco-friendly practices when it comes to energy generation, water usage and rubbish disposal, these resorts are usually constructed using locally-sourced and eco-friendly materials. Imagine staying in a wood cabin, or even a luxurious tent! These resorts are typically surrounded by protected natural areas, often including jungles as well as pristine beaches, with walking trails around the resort. This gives guests an unrivalled opportunity to spot some of the colourful local wildlife too.

Feature: Glamping in the UK for the bank holiday weekend

Sleeping on a creaky blow-up air bed, waking up to a donkey nuzzling your hair, then having to walk through dewy grass to use a toilet: camping is not glamorous. The cold morning air, disgruntled children screaming, and late night-party music from neighbouring campers can leave you wanting to pull your hair out and run to the nearest bed and breakfast. But have you ever heard of glamping?
